In the book "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quinonez, Chinos tenement was burned down. It was burned down by some guy named Fischman. He is Bodegas enemy from lower spanish Harlem. Fischman is another dealer like Bodega. Bodega owns one side of the neighbohood and Fischman owns the other. On page 145, Chino says " Fischman had done it. The fire was in retaliation for Salazar." According to this quote, Fischman was responsible for the fire. This all started because of Bodega and Fischman having problems. Since they had problems with eachother, Fischman went and burned Bodegas tenements, which was Chinos apartment.This shows that Fischman wanted to get revenge from Bodega.
how is the motif of love showed between bodega and Vera?
When bodega and Vera meet for the first time in a long time they both feel love towards each other. Even though Vera is married she still has feelings over bodega which is shown in many different ways throughout the story.According to the story it says "bodega smiled as if this was part of Vera's street education that had been denied her.A piece of her being that had been dormant all these years and it would be he who would revive it." This shows that the only person who can really bring back the old Vera is bodega because she is in love with bodega and this would mean that she will have to stay in the neighborhood. this is how the motif of love is shown between bodega and Vera.
when chino and blanca come back home after going to church they come home to find out that their apartment is on fire. After the fire men are done extinguishing the fire chino goes into the building to see what was left. while going through the burned stuff he finds the ring Vera gave him. in the story it says "i saw it glittering like a goldfish." this shows that chino found the ring because he now needs it more than all so that he and blanca can have money. therefore when he finds the ring it is shining so much because its the most precious thing they have right now. this is why the ring did not burn in the fire.
I think she is curious to find out what does chino does with bodega because she has heard alot of things of bodega and what he does. she also heared bodega had something to do with Salazar death. "What do you do with bodega i have heard alot of possitive and negative things of him" I believe blanca just want to know her husbands where abouts
Will Bodega affect Vera too much? When Bodega and Vera meet we see their love burst again but we also notice Vera get too excited about meeting Bodega. We see that she starts to talk about smoking and using weapons. In one page she says, "I want you to teach me how to smoke a joint...do you guns Izzy...i want to learn how to fire a gun." In this quote we see Vera's dark side. I notice that for her Bodega stands as freedom after many years of being bored. Although its good she gets this freedom she gets too excited and this can lead to her getting in danger. One example of this is Chinos and Blanca's house burning down. If Vera gets into a lot of trouble it can lead her to serious danger.
Will Chino go for vengeance? After the tragic disaster that occurred at Chinos and Blanca's Chino is left with much anger and what happen and it isn't because the house burned down its because of what could have happen if Blanca was in the house during the moment. At the end we see him talk to Nazario and he says, "This fuck could have killed my wife...he pushed me to the point where i could either break completely away from the situation or dive in completely." This quote shows that Chino is at that breaking moment where he is deciding to get revenge or not. I believe that he will but not himself but through Bodega and will use Vera to get to him. This vengeance of course will cause more trouble and put Chino on a darker path.
In round 4 and 5, Vera seems to be really drunk because she decided she dosent want her husband and gives the ring to chino and tells him to keep it. Later on in round 5 chino tells blanca about the ring and tells her that it would be beneficial "NO! I'm keeping it. If you don't want it then I'm pawning it. We have at least 4 or 5 months rent here". This shows that Chino only wants the ring to help the family because they really need the money because he wants to souport blanca especially with a baby on the way
Why does chino not want to give in into religion? Chino does not want to give in to religion because he has been in the streets and he is trying to be realistic in thinking that god does not exist. He feels that you have to fight to get what you need. He feels that he could get his things from Bodega like an apartment but hasn't gotten anything from God. He says "No one noticed me not joining in. Maybe Blanca did, but she knew where i stood on that." Things shows that he is saying that he does not want to pray with them because he isn't a strong believer.
Why does Bodega not want to let go of Chino? He does not want to let go of Chino because Chino is his only way in getting back with Vera. He also does not want to let go of chino because Chino is her nefew's husband so they are family. He says " wait, I have to speak with you! ... where are you going? ... you ain't just gonna leave me , that's not cool." This demonstrates that Bodega still needs Chino.
Response: Blanca found out about Bodega since Negra called her, telling to her to tell Chino that she needed Bodega.
