Bodega Dreams Rounds 3 and 4

For your homework grade you are responsible for posting TWO questions and responses in a TIED paragraph this week.  You may choose which TWO days' readings you want to post about, but all responses must be in a TIED paragraph meaning:

Topic Sentence: Answers the question in a complete sentence, includes author's name and title.

Intro to Evidence: Provide at least 2 - 3 sentences of context about what is happening in the story that helps prove your response to the prompt.  Explain the point in the story that you pulled your quote from.

Evidence: A strong quote from the text that backs up your response to the quote.  You should begin the quote by explaining who said it, for instance Chino says, " or Quinonez writes, "

Discussion of Evidence: Explain the meaning of your quote in your own words.  Then explain how it proves your answer to your question.

POST YOUR RESPONSES RELATED TO CHAPTERS 3 AND 4 IN THE COMMENTS BELOW.  ONLY POST HERE ON CHAPTERS 3 & 4.

    1. Bodega is so confident about his dream because he has a friend who is a lawyer named Nazario whose assisting him in making his neighborhood better. On page 24, it reads that "'Nazario, he's amazin.' Chino, he knows the law inside out, like a reversible coat. And thass the beginnin.'" This show that Nazario understands law and has been used to help Bodega get what he wants. Furthermore, on page 25, Bodega says that "'I was tellin' you, Chino, check it out, Nazario and I know that we are livin' in the most privileged of times...'" This shows that Bodega believes that the generation they're living in has hope.

    2. You bring up a really interesting quote and interpretation in your last two sentences, but I wished you had developed those ideas more. Why do you think they believe there is hope in the current times? Otherwise solid TIED paragraph. 9/10

  4. Question: Why is Chino thinking about Bodega's proposal now?

Response: Chino is thinking about Bodega;s offer because he requires money for his tuition and child and Bodega could provide that for him. On page 47, Chino had a conversation with Sapo talking about Bodega. "'You want something from me then you better have something I need.'" This quote shows that Chino understand what Bodega can offer and he's taking the chance while its open. Furthermore, Chino describes the problem he has and the deal he requests. "'It was not a good way to start a professional career, in debt. So we were paying for all our studies at full tuition out of our own pockets. Then there was a baby on the way and we needed more space.'" This shows that Chino would be willing to do anything for Blanca and his child that's coming soon.

    1. The quote doesn't exactly say that he would do "anything," just that he is worried about money/space. Be careful that you explain your ideas fully after your second quotes, in both posts you rush your explanations and don't fully develop the ideas. 9/10

  5. SHEREEN KHAN:

How does Sapo feel toward Chino now after Chino refused Bodega?

Sapo feels angry towards Chino because he refused Bodega and thinks that Chino is all about himself. He curses out Chino and thinks Chino's perspective of Bodega and his plan is wrong. Sapo says, "Bodega's been looking for a guy to work with Nazario for some time. And I thought of you. You know, I built yous up to Bodega. And then when he meets you for the job, laugh in his face, and don't take the job. 'Do you know how that', Sapo said, jabbing a finger in his chest "reflects on me?"(p40). This quote shows that Sapo wants Chino to accept Bodega's offer because it would have a bad impact on him. Bodega would probably think he's a liar because he good talked Chino to Bodega. He wants Chino to feel bad.

Question- Why is Chino thinking about the whole Bodega thing after he told him no?

Chino can't seem to get his mind off the Bodega offer. Although he refused Bodega, his mind still seems to be on it. He says "My mind was really on Bodega and what he said earlier that night. About Vera and what Bodega really wanted from me... Bodega wanted something from me so I would ask for something in return. It was basic, simple street politics: you want something from me then you better have something I need"(p47). This shows that Chino might accept the offer Bodega put forward and ask for something in return that would benefit him also. Chino will probably ask Bodega for a better apartment for Blanca, him, and the baby coming

    1. This is a well-organized paragraph and an important question, but I want you to push yourself to give deeper analysis in your responses. First gie the information as it's stated in the text (like your quote) but then go a little further by making an inference about why Chino feels the way he does, based on your understanding of his character. 9/10

Question 2: Most of the paragraph, including the quote, doesn't DIRECTLY answer your question of why he can't stop thinking about it. The answer to that question (like any good analytical question) requires you to make an inference based on how Chino has been described in the text. Make sure your quote matches your explanation. 8/10

  6. JENNETTE FERNANDEZ:

    1) Why did chino start to think about Blanca when he was high?

    2) Would chino ever change his mind for the project?

Response: Yes, Chino may change his mind and join the project again. Chino didn't want to join the project for Blanca's sake. He loves her and doesn't want to go through more problems even more now that she is pregnant and now his friends like Bodega and Sapo think he is fake and only cares about his life with Blanca. He then starts to think about the project and how he trusts Bodega and how he understands the purpose of this project. it says "Sapo believed in bodega because he knew other reasons why bodega was renovating the neighborhood, I started to believe a bit, myself", if he starts to believe and trust the project he may change his mind and join it, if he trusts the project and believes in it and believe that Bodega will make things happen without the cops knowing or finding out.

    1. You need to answer TWO questions in TWO TIED paragraphs.

Feedback for question 2: This is not an analytical question because the answer is clearly stated in the text. As we read on, we know that Chino accepts the offer. However, you did pick an interesting quote. You could develop it more by explaining why he might trust Bodega after hearing Sapo's good opinion of him. What do we know about his character that could explain this? 7.5/10

  7. Question: Why does Sapo feel annoyed about Chino not accepting the job?

Sapo feels annoyed about Chino not accepting Bodega's offer because he feels as if that Chino is being selfish. In page 40, it says "Yeah, thass why. Bodega's been looking for a guy to work with Nazzario for some time. And I thought of you. You know, I built yous up to Bodega. I told him, nah Chino is cool. You'll like him. He's a cool guy and smart". This quote means that Sapo was telling Bodega things such as "Chino is cool", "you'll like him" but as soon as they meet it wasn't the same. Instead Chino denied Bodega's offer and laughed in his face.
Question: What does Vera have to do with Bodega that is important?

In the past Vera and Bodega used to have a relationship. When Chino put all the pieces together he realized that Bodega is doing all his buisness and working hard so Vera can try to recognize. Since Vera is Blanca's aunt Bodega infered that by having Chino work with him he can get closer to Vera. In page 46 it says "Tell me more about Veronica and the street activist. I pictured him finding her; I've always loved you, Vera. Look at me, I fixed up everything, just like before". This quote means that Bodega is trying his hardest to get in contact with Vera. He will like for things to get back to the way they used to be and for Vera and him to fall in love again

    1. Post #1: well written post, but try and come up with a question no one has asked yet. Make sure to post on time to receive full credit! 7.5/10

Post #2: Good explanation of your answer in a well-written response. You could have added more to your explanation about how the quote shows that Bodega's business plan is all to impress Vera. 8/10
