Book 2 Round 3 Why did Chino think Bodega was trying to set him up?
In Bodega Dreams Bodega wanted Chino to come with him to do some business but they were also going to see Vera. He wanted to see her cause he hasn't seen her in 20 years, and she was visiting a local school that she was going to do a presentation in a local school. Chino agreed with Bodega and went with him. Chino knew Bodega was up to something saw Nazario on stage with Vera he knew something was up. Bodega acted like he could'nt see Vera for those past 20 years. "Bodega could have easily found Vera". Bodega wanted Chino to be there, because Vera and Chino are family, amd Bodega wanted to look like if he was close to Veras family, when he really wasn't.
Why doesn't bodega want anyone to know who he is? In "Bodega Dreams" Bodega is someone who helps the community by paying for any trouble people are having like college or a apartment. All he asks in return is loyalty towards him. In case something happens to him they back him up. Why doesn't he want anyone to know how he looks like? I think that this is so that when he goes outside and people know how he looks they will always recognize him and will drive a lot of attention towards him. This is because he says " but if you see God he won't seem that powerful anymore." This shows that when he wants to go outside he doesn't want anyone else to know how he looks because they will take advantage.
How did Bodega's success start? Bodega's success in the neighborhood started when he met Nazario. This is because since Nazario knew the loopoles in the laws he used it to his full advantage when he stared selling drugs.Him and Nazario used the money they earned to invest in the problems that the community is facing. He gave people loans and helped out people to get apartments and jobs in constructions. This is because he says,"And now, years later Bodega and Nazario were running an entire neighborhood." This shows how since they did what Nazario told him he got all his succsses from selling drugs.
Good use of context (and drawing attention to it -- ha!) Now you can work on adding 1 - 2 more sentences explaining how your quote proves your answer to the question. 8/10
Nazario wasn't an ordinary Latino. In fact, at the beginning of ROUND 3 "The Fish of Loisaida" Chino expresses how Nazario Inspired his ethnicity. He reffered how Nazario walk with pride and confidence all around the neighborhood. In addition, to his expensive style of suits. Chino said " He was like no one i had ever met. The presence that tells the people this man can lead. He was what we all wanted to be like, the Latino professional whom the anglos feared because he was just as treacherous, just as devious, and he understood power". This shows that he isn't an ordinary Latino and standout of is ethnicity because Chino is comparing Nazario to the very rich, bright "anglos". unfortunately, due to inequality Latinos haven't reach that social class.
how is the motif of friendship developed between nazario and bodega?
the motif of friendship has been shown throughout the story. An example is of the friendship between nazario and bodega. when bodega is in trouble, nazario would be his lawyer and help him get out of trouble. according to the story it says "and now, years later bodega and nazario were running an entire neighborhood." this shows that when they are together they can do anything possible because they got each others back. therefore the motif of friendship is developed between bodega and nazario.
nazario has been in the neighborhood his whole life and plans on changing it. he feels that in needs to change because many people need help and cant get get it. According to the story it says"so I knew why he was renovating all those buildings. He planned on housing his people there." this shows that nazario has plans on helping the neighborhood by giving people housing so they wont live on the streets.
In Chapter 3, Bodega will finaly meet Vera. With his nervous self, he gets as best dressed as he can. During the walk to the school, Bodega starts changing his mind about Vera and ultimately concludes to a firm decision to hate Vera after such a long wait. Why such a sudden change? Chino may have been the cause. One quote from the chapter said:"At least that way you'll get something out of this, bro, b'cause she married that guy for his money." This quote shows how Chino was influencing Bodega's mind to a new perspective about his feelings for Vera. Chino told Bodega that Vera just took him for granted, and that she's not worth his time, so what he should do instead, is to get over his love for vera. Adding to this, Chino also tells Bodega:"you've been waiting for this for a long time, bro. If anything, at least let's go and meet Vera so that you can show her what a mistake she made". Again, Chino tells bodega to generally "hate" Vera. So now, Bodega wants to go meet Vera to "show her what a mistake she made" instead of meeting her to marry her. This is the reason why Bodega was so capricious about this matter.
Why dosen't chino leaves when finding out he was being used?
Chino finally puts the peices together and realizes that the entire time Bodega really didnt need chino that he was being used to find way to connect with Vera not physically but emotionally. An example is that "bodega didnt need me if he wanted to find Vera he would have already he needed someone to get him into the family". This shows that bodega uses people he really didn't need chino he munipulated chino leading him to a lie and still knowing all that chino decides to stay he decides to play Bodega game.
Why does Nazario bring chino to the museum del bario?
In the story nazario tells chino that bodega and him that they can create a change in the neighborhod that they can change the way people see the neighborhood he takes chino to a museum that not even chino knew there was in the bario. Taking him to the museum nazario shows chino that there more about the neighborhood than it looks. I think the reason of bringing chino to the museum is to show him that they have power they can do more.
Question: Why did Nazario take Chino to the Salsa Museum?
Response: Nazario took Chino to the Salsa Museum because Nazario wanted him to meet the owner's daughter who wasn't there. Nazario wanted to (in my perspective) brag about the program he and Bodega run where they train people with professions. The owner's daughter is going to med school so she intends on being a doctor. On page 105, it read about Chino listening to Nazario and the owner speak. "They kept talking about the man's daughter, who would soon start med school." This shows that his daughter did get into med school. But, Nazario asked a question that brought up the answer. "'Your daughter,' Nazario asked him out of the blue, 'did she get in?'" This shows that Nazario is very curious about those who join Bodega to work together in order to help all of East Harlem.
Why is Bodega nervous, does he think that Vera wont marry him or not show up?
I think Bodega is nervous because they havent seen each other in years. Ans he doesnt know how she will react when they see each other. Or if she even came to New York. One piece of evidence that proves he is nervous is, " He then licked his lips as he had been doing all morning, shoved his hands in his pockets, and then took them out again. He walked fast and i had to tell him again to calm down." I think that this quote means that Bodega is nervous about seeing Vera again since its been years. Also he wont know how she would react to seeing him again.
I think that Nazario does because him and Bodega are giving people a place to live for cheap rent. A quote to prove this is, " when they start moving in, we wont be able to comele when it comes to rent, and we'll be left out in the cold. But if we build a strong professional class and accumulate property, we can counter that effect." This quote demonstrates how they are trying to rent apartments to the people in the neighborhood that dont have enough money to afford high rent.
Question: How did Bodega feel when he saw Vera after all these years?
When Bodega was around the age of 17 he was in love with a girl named Vera. But a few years later she was forced by her mom to marry aother guy that was wealthy. Ever since, Bodega has been working hard for her to notice him. Since Chino is Blanca's husband and Vera is Blanca's aunt, Bodega figured that by making a deal with Chino he would get closer to her. A few weeks later was the day that Bodega got to see Vera many years. On page it says "His gaze was fixed on her with intensity that indicates nothing else mattered or exsited.. He stared at her as if he was reeling back years.. It was as if Bodega had hit rewind on an ugly romantic scene that should have been shot differently.. after all these years he was now going to shoot the ending the way he always wanted." This quote signifies that Bodega's love for Vera only has gotten strong in the past couple of years. He felt as if he was falling in love all over again and this time he was going to have his happy ever after.
yes, ebarito is looking good to bodega. it says "si me haces el favor de decirle graias seguro que me doi, i want you to know that you ar welcome at my social club anytime" bodega must have done something nice to ebarito for ebarito to be so generous and say that bodega is welcome to go to his social club anytime.
2) How is the relationship between blanca and bodega ?
blanca and bodegas relationship isnt so honest and good. bodega wants to find vera, he ends up using everyone to get to her. all along he knew where she was, he was the one who donated the money to vera in the first place and chino is now finding out the truth but then acts in a way like he doesnt just to help out bodega. it says "he had used blanca without blanca even knowing it and i had been the one that had gotten us involved in all of this" this means that bodega didnt care about blancas feeling he would use anyone to get to blanca the women he loves, he had donatd to help but now wants to get a chance to talk to her and be with her even if it means hurting others
In the chapter it clarifies that had used blanca to get to vera. Bodega knows that only family members are as close as they are, and he wouldn't be able to try anything because since he isn't anything to her it would be impossible to try anything on her. After getting the help he needed he used blanca.
Question: Why is bodega so neevous?
In the story it shows exactly why he's so nervous in page 109 the quote says '' You're gonna go see someone you haven't seen in more than twenty years and your gonna smoke a joint before you see her''? This quote shows that when bodega is either anxious or nervous he tents to smoke alot. He's clearly nervous because he's about to meet someone that he hasn't seen in so long
Question- Why is Nazario treated like a God in the neighborhood by the people? Nazario is treated like a God by the people in the neighborhood because he works with Bodega and takes care of all their issues financially. It says, "Who better than Nazario to visit the people and give them help in the name of Bodega? It was Nazario who, by blending his education with politeness..."(p98). This quote shows that Nazario was the one people treated with respect because he's the one who takes care of everything in Bodega's absence since Bodega never shows himself to others. So Nazario is like a shadow of Bodega. In addition, Nazario is a well educated and warm man so people are grateful to him.
Question- How does Bodega feel before seeing Vera? Bodega is really nervous because it has been a long time since he's seen or spoken to Vera after she got married to the rich Cuban guy. He lights a blunt and starts smoking while Chino's getting ready. He says, "I'm nervous, what the fuck you want me to do?... He walked fast and I had to tell him again and again to calm down"(p110-111). This portrays that Bodega doesn't know how to act. He has no idea what will happen when Vera and him see each other.
